EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
